Printing

Do you print labels for customers?
We do not print onto A4 sheets for customers, we have specialised in supplying blank sheets only, which our customers print themselves on inkjet or laser printers. High street printers like prontaprint can often help if the quantities are low or medium. We recommend Etiquette.co.uk (based in Wrexham) for medium and high volumes of pre-printed labels.

How do I print on to the labels?
You should have a look at your printer manual regarding label printing, if you do not have a physical copy then most printer manuals are on the internet.
You could just use word or excel to generate the text you need to print, but it can be time consuming if there are several labels on a page and lining up the individual labels can be challenging.
For simple labels designs with text and graphics you can use the label printing section of MS word which is under the “tools” section on the main toolbar. Select “options” and “avery A4 A5” and then go down the list and select the template you need (template numbers are on the product pages of this site). Once you have selected the template type in some text then select “New Document” you will see a screen laid out as required.
We suggest working on the top left hand label only and then copying this as a cell into the rest of the template when you have got this label right. The finished document can be named and filed as any other word document.
For more complex labels then a design package may be needed, there are simple label design packages (search for “Label Design Software”) at relatively low cost. The professional full blown design packages cost considerably more and take several weeks to learn well, so it may be cheaper to use a designer.

How do I get the labels to line up?
Even when you use the correct template, the print and the labels do not usually line up exactly when you first print them and fine adjustments are often needed. This is because every printer is slightly different, and reacts differently to the software in use. If the print is badly out, then check that you are using the correct template, and check that the page size is set to A4 portrait.

If the print is simply too high/low or left/right then we recommend that you alter the page margins (file…page setup…margins) to correct the position of the print, and save the document with these changes.

Most A4 printers have an accuracy of plus or minus 1mm so you need to design labels with this in mind, try to avoid using borders around the perimeter of the label because any printing inaccuracy will show up.

If the position of the print is getting progressively worse down the page or across the page then it is the label size or the gap between labels that is wrong, so check the size in the template first. If the size is right then you need to increase or decrease the gap.

We are happy to assist customers and generally it just takes about 3 minutes on the phone to sort things out.

Will the labels print on my printer / copier?
We advise that you have a look in the manual for your machine, if you do not have a hard copy to hand then most printer manuals are on the internet. There is often a “labels” setting in the printer software and a few printers have hardware settings as well.

All the materials we supply in A4 sheets are all specifically made for lasers, inkjets and copiers and are standard materials made by UK companies. This means that they have the correct finishes, moisture content, backing papers etc. The labels are also cut on the sheets so that problems are minimised.

Some materials are specifically for laser printers, some are specifically for inkjet printers and some can be used on both. Any restriction of use is clearly shown on the product page where orders can be placed. Metallic and fluorescent finishes do not print on inkjets, and lasers are needed for waterproof print.

No label borders on templates?

If you have downloaded a word template but can not see the label borders it is because you have gridlines turned off in your word program. To turn gridlines on simply select "Design" on the main toolbar, then "Borders" and then "Gridlines". The borders to the labels on the template will then be shown for you.
