HAPPY HALLOWEEN from Label Planet

Thursday, October 31st, 2013

We’d like to wish all of our customers a Happy Halloween! We hope you get lots of treats (and no tricks)!

To celebrate, we’ve picked out a few of our labels that remind us most of Halloween (Beware! Bad puns and alliteration ahead!):

FRIGHTFUL FLUORESCENTS – They’re Shockingly Bright!
These coloured labels are available in five wickedly bright fluorescent colours. We’ve got a Rotting Red, a Ghoulish Green, a Yowling Yellow, a Monstrous Magenta and (most fittingly for a Halloween themed post) an Ominous Orange. These colours really jump out and capture your audience (or their attention anyway).

TERRIFYING TRANSPARENTS – You’ll Never Know They’re There!
These tricky transparents will disappear into thin air and make it look as though your text and images have appeared from nowhere, as if by magic. Our transparent static cling labels are also a brilliant way to make wonderfully weird window stickers.

HORRIFYING HIGH TACK – They’ll Never Let Go!
These unassuming labels have a hidden strength and once they’ve taken hold it’s a nightmare to escape their clutches! They’re supernaturally good at sticking onto bags of sweets, which makes them a spooky success for Halloween treats!

FAQ – Do You Have A Label That Is Compatible With Avery Code XXXX?

Tuesday, October 29th, 2013

A number of customers arrive on our website looking for a label that is compatible with an existing Avery* code. While we don’t sell Avery* products, a number of our labels are compatible in size and layout with Avery* manufactured labels.

To make it easier to find out if we have a label that matches the Avery* code you are working with, we’ve done our research and set up a brand new List of Labels Sorted By Avery* Code.

Each code in the table is listed along with the compatible Label Planet product, the dimensions of the label, and links to compatible Word and PDF templates for that code.

So, all you have to do is scan down the list to see if your Avery* code is included and, if it is, you can then view or buy the compatible Label Planet product and/or download a Word or PDF template free of charge to use to design your labels.

FAQ Special – Templates

Wednesday, October 23rd, 2013

Welcome to a special FAQ post – one all about templates!

Templates can be a tricky thing to master, and there are a few queries that crop up more than others. So we thought we’d round up the most common questions and put them all in one place, along with our answers!

1. Why doesn’t this template show circles/ovals?
Microsoft Word is, essentially, a “word processor”, meaning that it isn’t the most technically advanced piece of software when it comes to working with images. The ideal template would be a set grid of circles or ovals that you can fill in, but Word simply isn’t sophisticated enough to do this. Our solution is a grid of squares or rectangles; the circle or oval labels will fit inside the square or rectangle shapes in the grid and touch the four sides at the label’s widest point(s).
It IS possible to insert individual circle or oval shapes, but it can be quite difficult to add text or images over the top of this while keeping the correct alignment. We have found that the simplest solution is to work with a grid of squares or rectangles – bearing in mind that you should always test the layout and alignment by printing onto blank paper first and that printing circles and ovals will always involve a little bit of trial and error to get the very best print results.

2. Why do I have to check that my printer settings and page layout are set to A4?

One of the most common problems that customers encounter when printing templates is that the alignment gets progressively worse down/across the page. This is caused by a printer setting or page layout setting being set to something other than A4 – in other words, the printer is trying to print your design onto a sheet that is larger or smaller than A4. Usually, this size turns out to be “US Letter”, which is the default size used in the US. Many computers and printers are setup with US defaults, so if a printer or document does revert to a default setting it will be the American default of “US Letter” rather than A4. Of course, sometimes it may simply be that the last document printed on your printer was a different size – such as A5 or postcard – and the printer settings simply haven’t been set back to A4.

3. Will I have to make adjustments to a Label Planet template?
The short answer is: most likely yes.
While we do have some lucky customers who simply fill in one of our templates and get printing straight away, the majority of our customers will need to make some small adjustments to get the best alignment for their labels. Hopefully the biggest change you will need to make is a slight adjustment of the margins to move the grid left, right, up, or down slightly to get the best alignment when you print. Remember, we are always happy to advise customers on their template issues, including problems with alignment.

4. Why does my template print differently when I use another printer?
Simply put, all printers are slightly different. Some printers are able to print the entire surface of an A4 sheet, while others will have an unprintable strip around the outside of the sheet. There will also be a difference in the print alignment – usually this will be no more than 1-2mm, but when you’re printing onto labels this can become quite a problem.
We ran our own investigation into this at Label Planet. We asked a graphics designer to set up a template using exact measurements taken directly from a sheet of our labels. When we printed the template from different printers, we found that the alignment shifted EVERY SINGLE TIME – meaning you should always check to make sure that the alignment of the template will suit your printer (and, of course, the quickest and easiest way to do this is to just print onto a blank sheet of paper first).

5. Why doesn’t my template print out exactly as it looks on my screen?
Most operating systems, user interfaces, and computer programs are designed with the principle of WYSIWYG in mind. WYSIWYG stands for “What You See Is What You Get” and means that what a user sees on their screen should be as accurate a representation of the finished product (such as a printout, a slide in a presentation, or a web page) as possible. However, while the display will be as close to the final product as possible, it is not 100% accurate. Therefore, even if you set up a template using the measurements taken from a sheet and then print directly onto that sheet, it is likely that, in some way, the alignment will be off slightly. This is why you will always have to make adjustments to compensate for the difference between what is displayed on your screen and what your printer produces.

FAQ – Are There Extra Delivery Charges?

Thursday, October 17th, 2013

Here at Label Planet we decided to keep things inclusive – so all of our prices include VAT and standard UK delivery.

What this means is that the cost of standard delivery to UK postcodes is covered in the prices that we charge – so we don’t usually have to charge anything extra. Standard delivery is either by Royal Mail’s first class service for smaller orders and next working day carrier service for orders of 500+ sheets.

So, there aren’t any extra delivery charges for standard orders. BUT what if you have an order that has different requirements?

1. SPECIAL DELIVERY OPTIONS
We have a number of special delivery options designed to improve the security and/or speed of delivery – great if you need your labels to arrive before an impending deadline. These options include next working day guarantees with the Royal Mail (either pre-9am or pre-1pm), a Saturday Delivery option with the Royal Mail, and a Morning Delivery option with a carrier service. In each case we do charge an additional shipping fee – the amount we charge is determined by what the Royal Mail or the carrier service charge us, so you will only ever be charged enough to cover the extra delivery fee and nothing more. The next working day delivery option for delivery by 1pm is available for orders placed online (below 500 sheets), while all of the other options must be requested by phone.

2. DELIVERY TO SOUTHERN IRELAND + SOME “EXTENDED” POSTCODE AREAS IN THE UK
All deliveries to Southern Ireland and some deliveries to “Extended” postcode areas in the UK will be charged an extra shipping fee. Again, this fee will only ever be the charge that the Royal Mail or a carrier service assigns to an order. For customers in Southern Island, orders must be made by phone as the shipping charge is determined by the item and quantity being ordered – meaning we don’t currently have an option to calculate the appropriate carriage charge on our website. For customers in “Extended” postcode areas in the UK, a carriage charge may be applied to orders of 500+ sheets. For orders placed online, we will get in touch with you if there is a requirement for an additional shipping fee or, if you place your order by phone, we will advise you of any additional fee that will apply before you pay for your order.

New Search Category: Search By Supplier

Tuesday, October 15th, 2013

We’ve got all kinds of projects underway to help improve our website and the newest addition is our “Search By Supplier” page.

On this page you will find the product codes for 38 of our most popular label sizes alongside the compatible codes from Avery and a number of label manufacturers and suppliers.

Customers can use this page to look up compatible codes and templates, to cross-reference between products, and to (hopefully) make it a little easier to understand the range of label sizes, codes, and templates that are available and the compatibility between them.

[Avery and Avery product references are the trade marks of the Avery Dennison Group. Label Planet Ltd products are not made or endorsed by the Avery Dennison Group. Other manufacturers’ part numbers and names are also listed for cross-referencing purposes only and this does not imply in any way that Label Planet Ltd supplies or makes these products. Label Planet respects all the trade mark rights of all the companies listed.]

Static Cling Labels – Sample Packs For Schools

Tuesday, October 8th, 2013

To celebrate the launch of our Static Cling labels, we are putting together sample packs especially for schools.

This product is excellent for use in the classroom; the durable, waterproof polyester material is tough enough to survive the day to day activity of the classroom, and the use of static cling means that this product can be used over and over and over and over and over and over again.

Teachers can print onto these labels using a standard laser printer or – if they prefer – they can be written on using permanent marker pens.

These labels can be used as:
– Temporary signs
– Indoor signs
– Notices
– Warnings
– Reminders
– Name labels
– Teaching tools
– Protective covers for displays

The sample packs include information about the product, as well as a sample of the product, so teachers can see for themselves how useful this product is.

If you haven’t received a sample pack and would like to, simply send us an email at info@labelplanet.co.uk to request one now.

Getting The Most Out Of Your Samples

Thursday, October 3rd, 2013

Here at Label Planet, we offer free samples to customers so that they can try our products before committing to buying anything. This way, our customers know exactly what the labels will look like and, most importantly of all, that they are suitable for the job at hand.

We also want to make sure that our customers get the best out of their samples, so here’s our Samples Printing Advice:

Step 1: TEMPLATE DESIGN
– Replicate your final design as closely as possible, to make sure that the size and shape you are testing will be suitable for your requirements.
– We have free templates on our website, along with printing advice to help you along the way.
– Design your label in the top left cell first and do a test print onto plain paper to check the alignment and the finished look. Make any amendments as needed, then copy and paste the design into the other cells.

Step 2: PRINTER SETTINGS AND THE MEDIA BY-PASS TRAY

– The media by-pass tray is specifically designed for thicker materials (like labels) and will reduce the number of rollers that the sheet has to go through – improving the accuracy of the print alignment.
– Laser printers have a specific “labels” or “heavy paper” setting that increases the energy in the printer so that the toner bonds properly to the labels. The printer will probably slow down and the labels will feel hotter when they have been printed.
– If in doubt, check the manufacturer’s manual for your printer to check if there are any specific settings you need to use or instructions to follow when printing labels.

Step 3: REPLICATE THE SITUATION AS CLOSELY AS POSSIBLE
– Replicate the situation in which your labels will be used as closely as possible.
– For example, if you are using freezer labels on frozen goods you could replicate the process of labelling your products, storing them, and later removing them from the freezer to ensure that the labels survive the whole process.
– For example, if you are labelling items that may come into contact with water, food and drink products, or cosmetics and toiletries, you should test the labels by bringing them into contact with water or a small amount of your product to check that the label and the print survive this contact, as they would need to when the items have been sold and are being used.

If you do have any problems when testing your samples, or if there are any questions you would like to ask, please give us a call as we are more than happy to provide advice on choosing and testing your sample.

Label Planet’s (Label) Sizing Guide

Tuesday, October 1st, 2013

We often get queries about the sizes of label we offer, so we thought we’d put together a brief guide to everything size-wise at Label Planet.

MEASUREMENTS FIRST:
The first thing to remember is that we list all of our measurements in millimeters (mm) – so whenever you see a description of a label’s size on our website the values will always refer to millimeters.

SIZE MATTERS:
As specialists in labels supplied on A4 sheets, the sizes we can offer are determined by the dimensions of an A4 sheet – 210mm wide by 297mm high – and the sizes that will fit into that space most efficiently – i.e. with as little waste material as possible.

For example, consider our rounded corner rectangle LP8/99 (99.1mm wide by 67.7mm high) and our square cut corner rectangle LP8/105 (105mm wide by 74.2mm high). Both of these sizes are based on having 8 labels per page, but the measurements of the labels themselves are quite different. It is easy to see why the size of the LP8/105 label is what it is – they are made by dividing an A4 sheet into 8 equal rectangles with 2 columns and 4 rows. The width of the sheet (210mm) divided in half is 105mm and the height of the sheet (297mm) divided by four is 74.2(5)mm – so the size of these labels is 105mm x 74.2mm. As the LP8/99 are cut as rounded corner rectangles with both a gap between the labels and a margin around the edge of the sheet, the size of the labels has to be reduced to account for this additional space requirement.

Bespoke sizes will not necessarily fit onto an A4 sheet economically – there may be a great deal of wasted material, which would make them very expensive to supply. Generally speaking, these sizes are much more likely to be available on rolls – either as a standard size available to order from stock or as a bespoke size that is made to order. So, if you need a label that is a slightly unusual shape – such as a very long and thin label or a “credit card” size label – or if you need to be able to work in inches rather than mm, it is probably best to look for suppliers and/or printers of rolls of labels, rather than A4 sheets.

FINDING THE RIGHT SIZE:
We know that size is a very big part of choosing the right label, so we have TWO pages that list all of our labels in order of size – you can search for the perfect label by HEIGHT or by WIDTH.

TRYING A LABEL ON FOR SIZE:
If you’re not sure a label size is right for your purposes, you can always request a sample to test out for yourself.

TIP: FIT THE DESIGN GLASS SLIPPER TO THE LABEL FOOT AND NOT THE LABEL FOOT TO THE DESIGN GLASS SLIPPER
We often get customers who have spent time and money perfecting their label design and all they have left to do is buy the labels. Unfortunately, quite a few of them find that the specific dimensions they have settled on – while they look perfect and absolutely amazing – simply don’t match any of the sizes we offer, meaning that they will either need to compromise on the design or they will have to have bespoke labels made. So, to avoid design headaches and heartaches, we advise customers to measure the area they want a label for, look online for the closest existing match, and then design their label using those dimensions.
