Label Planet’s Brief Guide To Self Adhesive Labels

Wednesday, November 7th, 2018

If you’re buying self adhesive labels and find yourself overwhelmed at the sheer amount of options available, this is the post for you! We’ve put together a brief guide to what self adhesive labels are – and why there are so many options available.

What Are Self Adhesive Labels?

Self adhesive labels are labels made with a particular type of adhesive known as a “self adhesive” or “pressure sensitive adhesive”. A pressure sensitive adhesive is an adhesive that is tacky (sticky) at room temperature and requires only the pressure of a finger/thumb to form a successful application.

How Many Different Forms Of Self Adhesive Labels Are There?

Self adhesive labels come in many different forms; common examples include sheet labels (like our A4 labels), roll labels (where the labels are on a continuous backing sheet that is wound around a central core), and fan-fold labels (also carried on a continuous backing sheet but one that is perforated and then folded back and forth along these perforations). Some are intended for use with printers, while others are intended to be left blank or handwritten only.

Generally speaking, self adhesive labels are three-tier constructions; they have a top layer (the Face Material), a middle layer (the Adhesive), and a bottom layer (the Backing Sheet). The face material and adhesive separate from the backing sheet to form the “label” proper. Self adhesive labels may have additional layers to help produce a particular appearance or fulfil a particular function.

At Label Planet, we have chosen to specialise in A4 sheets of self adhesive labels, which are designed for use with standard desktop laser and inkjet printers.

Why Are There So Many Different Options?

You can use A4 labels for thousands of different label applications. Different applications require particular sizes, materials, and/or adhesives to ensure that the labels can create and sustain an adhesive bond under the unique circumstances and requirements of that particular application.

Therefore, while we “specialise” in one particular type of self adhesive labels, we still have a LOT of options. Our product range includes over 100 label sizes in over 30 material/adhesive combinations because we want all of our customers to be able to find an option that suits their application.

Label Sizes:

We supply “standard” label sizes. These sizes determined by the proportions of an A4 sheet; they are the result of dividing an A4 sheet into a specific number of labels, while leaving as little waste material around and between the labels as possible. We do not supply bespoke sizes; you would need to contact a label manufacturer to request bespoke label sizes.

Label Materials:

Our sizes are then available in various material/adhesive combinations. Each combination provides a range of properties suitable for different applications. For example, we provide…

  • Paper or Synthetic Materials.
Paper labels are a basic (and budget friendly) option suitable for general applications. Synthetic labels offer specialised properties for more demanding applications; for example, those requiring transparent labels, waterproof labels, or asset / security labels.
  • Inkjet Labels or Laser Labels.
Different printers use VERY different printing methods. Inkjet printers disperse inks onto a surface, where they are partially absorbed before drying in place. Laser printers use heat (and pressure) to bond a dry powder (toner) onto a surface. Some materials suit one particular printing method (others suit both). We therefore supply laser labels and inkjet labels to allow our customers to get the best possible print quality.
  • Coloured Labels, Transparent Labels, and Gloss Labels / Matt Labels.
For many customers, appearance is key. We therefore provide options for coloured labels, transparent labels, along with gloss finishes (bright and shiny) and matt finishes (dull and flat).
  • Permanent, Removable, and Special Adhesives.
Pressure sensitive adhesives are either permanent or removable. The former create strong adhesive bonds that make labels difficult to remove. The latter create adhesive bonds that hold labels in place while needed before removing easily and cleanly (without damaging the surface or leaving behind adhesive residue). We supply permanent labels and removable labels along with specialised adhesives designed for specific applications. Examples include our high / super tack adhesives (create strong adhesive bonds even on unusual materials and/or curved surfaces), marine adhesive (for outdoor applications), VOID adhesive (for security labels), deep freeze adhesive (for items used/stored in freezer conditions), water wash off adhesive (for reusable containers), and super removable adhesive (for temporarily labelling delicate items).

Void Security Labels From Label Planet Keep All Items Safe & Secure

Wednesday, October 10th, 2018

Security labels and tamper evident labels increase the security of items. This week, we’re taking a closer look at our silver void security labels.

security labels - silver void labels - label planet ltd

VOID Security Labels – What Are Security Labels?

The term security labels may be applied to any label designed to improve the security of labelled items. Security labels can improve the security of items in a number of different ways. They may act as a visual deterrent against tampering or theft, provide a means of tracking an object, and/or contain special features that prevent the production of counterfeit items.

Security labels known as Tamper Evident Labels provide visual proof of tampering. This can also act as a visual deterrent against such tampering occurring in the first place.

Tamper evident labels provide visual proof of tampering in different ways; removing a label usually leaves a section of that label behind.

VOID Security Labels – How Do Void Labels Work As Security Labels?

VOID security labels leave behind a message (usually the word “VOID”) on the label itself, the previously labelled item, or both. This method involves adding an extra layer to the label construction. There are three types of VOID security labels…

  • Total Transfer: the extra layer carries a printed void message. It separates from the face material (top layer) to leave the extra layer (and the void message) on the previously labelled item.
  • Non-Transfer: the extra layer carries a printed void message. It remains attached to the face material. The absence of the label and the void message on the back of the label serves as proof of tampering.
  • Partial Transfer: the extra layer is connected to the face material using a pattern release coating OR is connected to a pattern release adhesive. The extra layer divides in two – half remaining on the back of the face material and half on the adhesive. This leaves the void message on the reverse of the label itself and on the previously labelled item.

Our void security labels use a partial transfer, leaving a void message on the label and the previously labelled item. Any attempt to re-stick the label back down will not be able to disguise the split in the extra layer created during the first removal.

VOID Security Labels – What Are The Benefits Of Void Security Labels?

Our void security labels are made with silver polyester and a partial transfer VOID adhesive. They are tough, durable, and waterproof labels, which makes them ideal long life tracking labels. They will remain firmly in place for the lifetime of a labelled item or for the duration of storage and/or transportation. The material also suits applications with fluctuating or extreme temperatures (hot or cold), which is often an issue for appliances and electronics.

The colour draws attention to your information. This could include a company logo and/or contact information, health and safety warnings, instructions for use, or general security information.

Our silver polyester has a high quality matt finish. This produces a decorative and professional appearance, which is perfect for high value goods.

The adhesive bonds well with a range of materials and surfaces types. They can be used on (slightly) curved surfaces but flat surfaces are better. The polyester has a strong “memory” and is likely to “ping” up if applied over an edge or around a tightly curved surface. To label edges and curves, use a larger label size to provide a larger surface area for your adhesive to bond.

VOID Security Labels – What Kind Of Security Applications Do Void Security Labels Suit?

Security Labels On High Or Added Value Goods

Void labels act as a visual deterrent against tampering and theft. They also provide visual evidence of tampering. This improves the security of labelled items and can help to prevent unauthorised reselling.

Security Seals On Product & Document Packaging

Seal packaging used to store and/or transport high value goods or important documents. Opening the packaging marks both the seal and the packaging itself. Sticking the label back down cannot disguise a broken seal because of the divide in the extra layer.

Warranty Labels On High Or Added Value Goods

Goods sold with a warranty may have security labels applied. If products are tampered with in a certain way, the damage to or removal of warranty labels proves that the warranty has been voided by an individual’s actions or treatment of the product. They can display details about the warranty supplied with a particular product or contact information for the relevant manufacturer, distributor, or servicing company. They can also detail the servicing history of an item, including servicing dates and results. Warranty labels are especially popular for use on high value appliances and electronic devices.

VOID Security Labels – How Do I Print Void Security Labels & Tamper Evident Labels?

Our SVP material does require a little extra care to get the perfect print.

This is because the polyester material is metallised – coated with a thin layer of metal. Laser printers use heat (and pressure) to bond toner in place. The layer of metal reflects heat from the fuser unit, which increases the overall temperature applied during printing. You therefore need to use a print setting that applies less heat to get the correct print temperature.

The wrong settings may prevent your toner bonding properly and/or may cause your sheets to curl up and jam inside your printer.

We highly recommend test printing a few sheets to determine which print setting works best. Check your printer’s manual and/or the manufacturer’s website in case they have provided recommended guidelines for self adhesive labels and more specialised materials.

Label Planet’s Checklist For Choosing Self Adhesive Labels

Wednesday, August 29th, 2018

Our checklist for choosing self adhesive labels includes the key factors you need to keep in mind when selecting the most suitable stickers.

You don’t need to use all of these factors to choose the right self adhesive labels for your application. Nor do you have to follow this exact order when picking your perfect stickers. Instead, take a look through the list and see which factors apply to your situation. You can then place them in an order based on how important they are to your label application.

Label Planet Labels Logo

Do You Need To Print Or Handwrite Your Self Adhesive Labels (Or Will They Be Left Blank)?

If you intend to leave your sticky labels blank (for example, to use them as seals on documents or packaging), you can select ANY of the self adhesive labels supplied by Label Planet. The same applies if you’d prefer to handwrite your sticky labels. Paper labels are the easiest to handwrite. Gloss labels and synthetic (plastic) labels may require the use of more specialised pens (compared to a simple biro).

Most of our customers want to print their own sticky labels. Our self adhesive labels are designed for desktop printers. Some can only be printed with a laser printer or only with an inkjet printer. You can find printer compatibility for all of our products on our website and packaging.

Do You Need A Particular Label Size Or Shape For Your Self Adhesive Labels?

You may need self adhesive labels to fit onto items or into a space that requires the use of a particular label size and/or shape. At Label Planet, we supply rectangular labels (with round or square cut corners), round labels / circular labels, oval labels, square labels, media labels, and CD labels / DVD labels. We also supply a range of more than 100 label sizes.

Self adhesive labels supplied on A4 sheets tend to be available in “standard” label sizes. These sizes are created by splitting an A4 sheet into (usually) equally sized label shapes with as little waste around and between the blank labels. You can view all of our label sizes on our Search By Width and Search By Height pages or by using our Label Finder.

Do You Need Your Self Adhesive Labels To Stay Stuck Permanently Or Temporarily?

We supply a variety of adhesives, which means there are two questions that you need to answer.

First, you need to decide if you want permanent labels or removable labels.

Removable labels are designed to remove cleanly without leaving behind adhesive residue. If you need removable labels, your next question is: are you labelling delicate items, reusable containers, or something else.

  • Label delicate items (e.g. those made of paper or glass) using our super removable adhesive.
  • For reusable containers (e.g. to label foodstuffs), we recommend our water wash off adhesive. This permanent adhesive breaks down in water, so you can remove your sticky labels by washing your items.
  • For any other items, use any of our sticky labels with a removable adhesive.

Permanent labels are designed to stay in place permanently and to be difficult to remove. We offer options for:

  • Super/high tack adhesives; designed for applications where your sticky labels have to stay in place OR for more unsual surfaces/materials (e.g. fabrics, plastics, building materials etc).
  • Freezer adhesive; designed for labelling items that are to be stored and/or used in deep freeze conditions, such as food stuffs or medical/research samples and equipment.
  • Marine adhesive; designed for outdoor applications. Also suitable for general applications that require tough, durable, and long-lasting tracking labels.
  • Water wash off adhesive; creates a permanent adhesive bond that breaks down when exposed to water.
  • Opaque adhesive; designed for applications where you need to cover up existing print (usually because it is wrong or out of date).
  • Security adhesives; designed to provide visual evidence of tampering.
  • Standard permanent adhesives; create good adhesive bonds with a range of surfaces.

Do You Need Self Adhesive Labels That Are Waterproof / Transparent?

If you need to use waterproof labels or transparent labels, you will need to choose from our range of synthetic materials. You can then choose between laser labels or inkjet labels, permanent labels or removable labels, and gloss labels or matt labels.

NB: if you want to print waterproof labels, you will generally need to use a laser printer. Standard inkjet inks are water-based and so run or smudge when wet. Laser printers use heat and pressure to bond a dry powder (toner) into place creating waterproof print. The one exception is our MWPP material, which uses a special top coating to seal inkjet print in place to create waterproof inkjet labels.

We also have two laser paper labels, which we call “splashproof”. Paper labels will be damaged by water because they are made using paper. Our GW and SG paper labels have top coatings that provide limited protection against water, which means they can be wiped clean and dry if lightly splashed with water.

Do You Want To Use Coloured Labels Or A Particular Finish On Your Self Adhesive Labels?

Our range of coloured labels includes pastel coloured labels, fluorescent labels, gold labels and silver labels, and brown ribbed Kraft paper labels.

You can also choose between gloss labels or matt labels. Gloss labels have a bright and shiny finish that is perfect for adding a subtle decorative touch. Our gloss range includes various “full” gloss labels as well as our semi-gloss labels.

Do You Have A Particular Budget For Your Self Adhesive Labels?

For some people, a defining factor in their final decision is their budget. Standard paper labels will always be the most budget friendly option. Any special characteristics (e.g. colour, transparency/opacity, gloss coatings, special adhesives etc) will push the prices up.

At Label Planet, we use a price break system, which creates a better price per unit for larger quantities.

You also need to bear in mind that we cannot stock all of the material and adhesive combinations that we supply. Stocked items come in 25 sheet packs or 500 sheet boxes. Non-stocked items are made to order and come in 500 sheet boxes. Made to order options, therefore, tend to be more expensive. Sometimes it is worth being flexible with your label size, material, or adhesive to find a suitable stocked option that can do the job in hand without wrecking your budget.

How To Find Your Selected Self Adhesive Labels & Place An Order With Label Planet

There are a variety of search tools on the Label Planet website to help you find the perfect self adhesive labels.

How Removable Labels Help You Avoid A Big Sticky Mess

Wednesday, August 1st, 2018

Removable labels are this week’s sticky issue. Find out how they work and why they help you remove sticky labels without getting in a sticky mess.

What Are Removable Labels & Removable Adhesives?

The name is a bit confusing because pretty much any self adhesive label can be removed – if you try hard enough. Removable labels, however, are designed specifically to be removed. They form adhesive bonds that hold your sticky labels in place but don’t leave behind adhesive residue when you remove your sticky labels.

Removable labels create temporary self adhesive labels. You may only need to label items for a specific length of time. Alternatively, if the information displayed on your labels needs to be updated, you may need sticky labels that are easy to replace.

How Do Removable Adhesives Work?

Like permanent adhesives, removable adhesives create an adhesive bond with a surface. Where they differ is how they behave when removing a sticky label.

To remove a permanent label by physical force alone, you have to apply enough force to break apart the adhesive layer. This often makes it difficult to remove the label in one piece (especially paper labels, which tend to tear apart) and leaves behind adhesive residue.

This is because permanent adhesives have excellent adhesion and cohesion. Adhesion is the strength of the adhesive bond with another surface, while cohesion is the internal strength of the adhesive bond itself.

Removable adhesives, therefore, tend to have high cohesion but lower adhesion. This means the internal strength of the adhesive bond is stronger than the external bond with a surface. When you remove a label, the adhesive layer remains in one piece (leaving no residue behind).

Most pressure sensitive (self-adhesive) removable adhesives work this way. Alternative methods rely on applying an external agent to permanent adhesives in order to break down the adhesive bond. One example is our Water Wash Off Labels, which have a permanent adhesive that breaks down when exposed to water. You can remove your permanent labels from labelled items simply by  giving them a good wash.

What Kinds Of Removable Labels Are Available From Label Planet?

We supply a range of different removable labels to help our customers find an option that best suits their application.

Get Stuck Into The Great Outdoors With Waterproof Labels From Label Planet

Wednesday, July 11th, 2018

Label Planet Labels Logo

If you’re looking for self adhesive labels you can use in the great outdoors, why not try our waterproof labels. They’re ideal for traditional British summers (with plenty of rain) as well as not-so-traditional summers like this one!

Why Are Waterproof Labels Perfect For Outdoor Applications?

The main benefit of using waterproof labels for outdoor applications is because they offer protection against water and similar substances. This is especially useful in typical British summers, which tend to involve a lot of inconvenient rain.

Given that this year, we’ve experienced some of the hottest (and driest) weather on record, we thought it was time to acknowledge some of the other benefits of using waterproof labels.

Waterproof labels are made using synthetic materials such as plastics. These materials offer a wide range of characteristics and properties that make them highly versatile and well-suited to more challenging environments.

For example, they tend to be a lot more durable and long lasting than other materials, especially paper labels. They also tend to be stronger and more stable, which is particularly useful outside where environmental factors are likely to change and fluctuate over time. Other materials are more likely to deteriorate quickly in such conditions, making sticky labels illegible or causing their adhesive bond to fail (so they fall off).

Synthetic materials also tend to offer greater resistance to damage from environmental factors such as moisture, solvents, oils, chemicals, oxidation, ionising radiation, abrasion, extreme and/or fluctuating temperatures, and light (including UV light).

What Kinds Of Waterproof Labels Are Available From Label Planet?

We supply a range of waterproof labels to help you find the perfect finish for your project. We have options for laser labels, inkjet labels, matt labels, gloss labels, white labels, silver labels, transparent labels, permanent labels, and removable labels.

RANGE FINISH COLOUR MATERIAL ADHESIVE PRINTER
MTP Matt Transparent Polyester Permanent Laser
GTP Gloss Transparent Polyester Permanent Laser
GTR Gloss Transparent Polyester Removable Laser
GCP Gloss Transparent Polyester Permanent Inkjet *

GWP Gloss White Polyester Permanent Laser
MWP Matt White Polyester Marine Permanent Laser
MWR Matt White Polyester Removable Laser
MWPE Matt (Off) White Polyethylene Marine Permanent Laser & Inkjet
MWPO Matt White Polyolefin Marine Permanent Laser & Inkjet

Three of our waterproof labels have a marine permanent adhesive. This adhesive has met the requirements of the BS5609 part 2 standard for use in marine (outdoor conditions). This internationally recognised standard requires products to undergo a series of tests, including submersion in seawater for three months.

Designed for labelling chemical drums that are to be shipped overseas (where contents must be identifiable even if the drums fall overboard), these are some of our toughest self adhesive labels – making them perfect for outdoor applications.

* Please note that our GCP labels are waterproof. However, if you print them with standard water-based inkjet inks, your print will not be waterproof and will run or smudge when wet.

How Do You Print Waterproof Labels So They Have Waterproof Print?

All of our waterproof labels are – surprisingly – waterproof labels. Or, in other words, all of the materials used to make these sticky labels are waterproof. If you want PRINTED waterproof labels, however, it’s not always so straightforward.

Our waterproof laser labels are perfect for creating printed waterproof labels. Laser printers use a dry printing process (involving heat and pressure) to bond a dry powder (called toner) onto your sticky labels, which results in waterproof print.

Waterproof inkjet labels are a little more tricky. Standard inkjet inks are water-based and will run or smudge when wet. To create waterproof inkjet labels you either have to:

  1. Purchase waterproof inks that are not water-based.
  2. Add a protective layer over your print. For example, you could apply a transparent label over your print OR by use a sealant spray.

This is why the majority of our waterproof labels are laser labels. HOWEVER…

NEW WATERPROOF LABELS COMING SOON

…We will soon be introducing a brand new range called MWPP. These are waterproof labels for use with inkjet printers. These inkjet labels are made from polypropylene and a special top coating, which allows your printing inks to dry quickly and efficiently onto your labels AND acts as a protective (and waterproof) barrier over your print.

We have some stock available to supply as samples. Simply get in touch with our Customer Service Team and request a sample of MWPP.

Get All Your Summer Treats Labelled With Bottle Labels And Jar Labels From Label Planet

Wednesday, June 27th, 2018

Whether you’re selling food and drink as a business or simply making some home-made treats for friends and family, we’ve got the perfect sticky labels for your bottles and jars.

We’ve got bottle labels and jar labels in all shapes and sizes with material and adhesive options to suit all sorts of food and drink labelling applications.

BOTTLE LABELS AND JAR LABELS – WATERPROOF LABELS

You might be looking for bottle labels and jar labels that will remain firmly in place – print and all – even if they get a bit wet. In this case, we would recommend looking at our waterproof labels. These are all made with waterproof materials. Your sticky labels will stay stuck even if you submerge your bottles and jars in water. To ensure that the print remains in place, you will need to use a laser printer. Laser printers use a dry printing process to bond a dry powder (toner) onto your sticky labels. This results in waterproof print. Inkjet printers tend to use water-based inks, which run or smudge when wet.

Our waterproof labels are more expensive than paper labels. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, why not try our Splashproof Labels. These are paper labels with a gloss or semi-gloss coating, which creates a light layer of protection against moisture. You can’t submerge these sticky labels in water as they are, after all, still paper labels. If lightly splashed with water, you can wipe them clean and dry.

Our range of waterproof labels includes options for white labels or transparent labels, permanent labels or removable labels, and matt labels or gloss labels – so you can find an option that suits your application and the overall style you want to create on your bottles and jars.

BOTTLE LABELS AND JAR LABELS – REMOVABLE LABELS

If you want sticky labels that you can remove without damaging your containers, you need removable labels.

We have a range of sticky labels made with removable adhesives. Removable adhesives create strong adhesive bonds that remove cleanly from a surface in one piece. So no more sticky messes of adhesive residue. We have removable paper labels, as well as removable transparent labels, and removable white waterproof labels.

Alternatively, you may want to try our Water Wash Off Labels. These paper labels are made with a special permanent adhesive. This adhesive creates strong adhesive bonds that break down when you wash labelled items (ideally in warm soapy water). Wash off adhesives let you safely and securely label containers without worrying about the sticky labels falling off too soon OR about them damaging your containers when you try to remove each label.

Our removable labels can be handwritten or printed using a standard desktop printer. If you choose removable transparent labels or removable white waterproof labels, you need to use a laser printer.

BOTTLE LABELS AND JAR LABELS – FREEZER LABELS

You might be labelling bottles and jars that contain foodstuff that need to be stored in a freezer. Standard adhesives will often fail in freezing conditions. We supply a range of freezer labels, which are made with a special deep freeze adhesive. Designed for deep freeze conditions, this adhesive can form and sustain successful adhesive bonds in temperatures as low as -40°C.

Our freezer labels are made with standard matt white paper and may be handwritten or printed with a laser printer.

BOTTLE LABELS AND JAR LABELS – TRANSPARENT LABELS

Finally, if you’re looking for sticky labels to match transparent bottles and jars, we have a variety of transparent labels. Using transparent labels on transparent items can create a “floating print” effect or make it seem as though your printed design is actually part of your containers.

Our range of transparent labels includes options for permanent labels and removable labels, as well as the choice between matt labels and gloss labels. You must double check if you have a laser printer or an inkjet printer available. Most of our transparent labels are laser labels and can only be printed with a laser printer.

MWP vs MWPE vs MWPO – Which Waterproof Labels Will Win?

Wednesday, May 16th, 2018

If you’ve been searching for waterproof labels, you may have noticed that we supply three marine labels that are very similar. Our polyester labels (MWP), polyethylene labels (MWPE), and polyolefin labels (MWPO) ARE very similar. They all have a matt white finish, are all waterproof labels, and all have a marine standard permanent adhesive. So how do you know which waterproof label is the right one for you?

The answer lies in your label application. Each material has its own properties and characteristics that are better suited to certain applications compared to the others. It just depends on what you need your waterproof labels to be able to do…

Waterproof Labels That Will Stay Stuck

While all three have a marine standard adhesive, the different materials cause slight variations in the level of tack (stick). This is most noticeable when labelling more unusual materials and surface types.

For example, if you apply all three onto a completely flat, clean metal surface you would see very little difference. On rough materials or curved surfaces, the polyethylene would cope the best with any surface variations. The polyolefin would be next best, followed by the polyester.

If your label application involves a curved surface or unusual materials (such as fabrics or building materials) you may wish to choose polyethylene.

Waterproof Labels That Will Bend & Stretch

One of the most notable differences between these three materials is how well they bend and stretch. Polyester is a rigid material and will not stretch at all. Polyolefin offers better flexibility and stretch, while polyethylene is the most flexible and stretchy material of the three.

The material you choose depends on whether you need waterproof labels that ARE flexible or ARE NOT flexible. For example, to label curved surfaces you need waterproof labels that will conform to the shape of your items. If you apply a rigid label material to a curved surface, one of two things will happen:

  • Your sticky labels won’t conform to the shape of your items. You may find areas where your labels aren’t stuck to the item. Alternatively, there won’t be sufficient contact to allow a successful adhesive bond to form at all and your waterproof labels will fall off immediately.
  • You will be able to temporarily force your sticky labels to conform to the correct shape BUT the memory of the material will cause them to return to their original flat state – overcoming the strength of the adhesive bond and resulting in your waterproof labels slowly peeling away from the surface.

Alternatively, you may be looking for waterproof labels that won’t tear or deform easily, even when used as long life tracking labels on items that are regularly moved or handled a lot. In this case, you will need waterproof labels that offer good resistance to tearing and stretching.

If your label application involves curved surfaces you may wish to choose polyethylene (as the most flexible option), while polyester is the best bet if you need tough and durable waterproof labels that will resist the wear and tear of long term applications.

Waterproof Labels That Will Print Out Perfectly

While all three printer labels are suitable for use with standard desktop printers, some are easier to print than others.

First you need to consider whether you have an inkjet printer or a laser printer. MWPE and MWPO are laser labels and inkjet labels; they can be printed with a laser printer or an inkjet printer. MWP are laser labels and can ONLY be printed with a laser printer.

Next you need to take into consideration the specification of your printer. Waterproof labels are thicker than standard paper labels and so you need to check that your printer has a media bypass tray (a secondary tray designed specifically for thicker materials) as well as the weight of materials that your printer will accept. If your printer cannot handle heavier materials, you will need to choose a thinner material to ensure that you can print your waterproof labels.

Polyethylene is a VERY thick material and requires careful handling; if your printer is not designed to handle very thick materials, you may find that you struggle to produce a consistent print quality on your waterproof labels (if you manage to print them at all). Polyester, however, is much thinner making it a much easier and more reliable material to print. Polyolefin is a thicker material BUT not as thick as polyethylene, which makes it a perfect compromise between MWP and MWPE.

Waterproof Labels That Will Fit Into Your Budget

If you’re ordering fewer than 500 sheets there is absolutely no difference between the three options. If you’re looking to buy in bulk (and on a budget) there is a difference in cost; MWP is the most expensive option, followed by MWPE, and then MWPO.

A Handy Flowchart To Help You Choose The Perfect Adhesive Labels

We supply THIRTY ranges of self adhesive labels giving you a choice of TEN different types of adhesive. This many choices can be confusing – especially if you need sticky labels for very specific circumstances.

So, we’ve pooled our knowledge of self adhesive labels to create a simple flowchart. This chart will guide you towards the adhesive labels that are right for your label application.

You simply need to answer TWO basic questions to find out the type of adhesive that you should choose.

Label Planet Guide To Adhesives

The (Inevitable) Exception To The Rule Of Choosing The Perfect Adhesive

There is an exception to this rule and that is temporary labels to stick onto clothing or fabric items. For example, you might want product labels for clothing or fabric items that can be removed without damaging those items after they have been sold. Alternatively, you might be hosting a networking event and want to hand out temporary name badges or you could be hosting a charity event or open day and want to give people stickers to reward their participation. Either way, your sticky labels mustn’t ruin people’s clothing at the end of the event.

In this case, we recommend a standard permanent adhesive instead of a removable adhesive. This is because fabrics have unusual and varied surfaces that can be difficult for removable adhesives to bond with properly. Permanent adhesives have the extra strength to ensure your adhesive labels remain in place BUT they won’t form a solid bond, which means they can be safely removed from clothing.

Next Steps: Request A Sample Or Place An Order For Your Adhesive Labels

Celebrate The Arrival Of Spring With Suitably Seasonal Sticky Labels From Label Planet

We’re Celebrating Spring With Sticky Labels That Are Perfect For The Season Of Spring!

Yesterday saw the occurrence of this year’s Spring Equinox; marking one of the two moments each year when the sun is directly above the equator (meaning night and day are – roughly – equal in length). The Spring Equinox has traditionally been used as a marker of the beginning of Spring – although the weather doesn’t always agree!

With this in mind, we thought we’d put together our top three sticky labels that are well-suited to the seasonal changes that happen with the arrival of Spring.

Add A Bloom Of Colour With Coloured Labels / Fluorescent Labels / Metallic Paper Labels / Kraft Labels

To brighten up any labelling project, choose one of our coloured labels to add a bloom (or burst) of colour. We have a variety of colourful options to choose from including:

Pastel Coloured Labels – suitable for use with inkjet and laser printers or for handwriting, these coloured labels are perfect for adding a subtle bloom of colour to any project and you can choose between seven different shades!

Fluorescent Labels – suitable for laser printers or for handwriting, these paper labels are brilliant if you prefer an eye-catching burst of colour to blow away the cobwebs of winter – choose between five neon colours to bright up your day!

Gold Labels / Silver Labels – suitable for laser printers or for handwriting, metallic paper labels offer a luxurious touch of shimmer and shine if you’re looking to step into spring with a hint of glamour.

Brown Kraft Labels – suitable for laser printers and inkjet printers or for handwriting, our Kraft labels have a ribbed finish, which adds a subtle touch of pattern and texture – ideal for any projects that need to have a natural, homemade feel.

Introduce A Subtle Shimmer Of Sunlight With Gloss Labels / Semi-Gloss Labels

If you simply can’t wait for summer, why not add a bit more brightness to your world with our gloss labels and semi-gloss labels. Made with high quality coatings, these sticky labels have a gloss (or semi-gloss) finish, which means that they reflect light REALLY efficiently, creating a bright and shiny appearance.

We supply a range of self adhesive labels with a gloss finish, including gloss paper labels, gloss waterproof labels, gloss transparent labels, and our semi-gloss paper labels – which offer a subtle alternative to a full gloss finish.

Avoid The Problems Of Spring Showers With Waterproof Labels / Splashproof Labels

Obviously, Spring has a tendency to bring with it a seasonal shower or two (or three or four or more), which means that you might be in need of sticky labels that can put up with the Great British Weather.

This is where our waterproof labels / splashproof labels come in; our waterproof labels are made with materials that can survive exposure to or even total submersion in water – especially our three “marine labels”, which are made with a special adhesive specifically designed for use in marine environments. Waterproof labels can be used for both indoor and outdoor applications where there’s a chance of a spring shower!

For a more budget friendly option, you could also try one of our splashproof options; these are paper labels with an additional coating that provides a thin layer of protection against minor exposure to water – meaning you can wipe your sticky labels clean and dry if they are lightly splashed with water. As paper labels, however, they are NOT a fully waterproof solution and will be damaged by prolonged or major exposure to water.

To produce fully waterproof labels OR splashproof labels, you will need to print your sticky labels using a laser printer; laser printers use a dry printing process to bond toner onto a surface (producing waterproof print), while inkjet printers tend to use water-based inks that will run or smudge if they get wet.
