GS1 Sunrise 2027 - What is GS1 Sunrise 2027?
Definition of GS1 SUNRISE 2027:
GS1 Sunrise 2027 is a global initiative set up by GS1 to introduce the use of 2D barcodes at point of sale locations rather than 1D barcodes.
GS1 is an organisation that sets international standards for barcodes. They help companies and organisations to use barcodes as part of their operations. In particular, they provide support to the retail, healthcare, and transport and logistics industries.
Currently, the most common type of barcode is the linear barcode or 1D barcode. A 1D barcode is made up of a pattern of lines (bars) and spaces (intercharacter gaps), which can be scanned by an optical scanner (barcode reader) to reveal a product identification number. For example, a Global Trade Number (GTIN), International Standard Book Number (ISBN), International Article Number (EAN), or Universal Product Code (UPC). Unfortunately, 1D barcodes are restricted to this one short code and can only be read by barcode scanners (or smartphones with specialist apps).
Matrix barcodes or 2D barcodes are made up of a square or rectangular pattern (matrix) of black and white cells or modules (other colours can be used). The most common example of a 2D barcode is a QR code. 2D barcodes can store much more information and can be read by both optical scanners and smartphone cameras.
This means that a 2D barcode can hold a product identification number as well as product information, pricing, offers and discounts, instructions for use, health and safety warnings, contents or ingredients, assembly instructions, sell by dates, stock levels, tracking information and delivery instructions, contact information for the manufacturer or supplier, or a link to a website. It also means that the barcode can be scanned both by staff at point of sale and by customers who want to find out more about the products they are buying.
