FAQ – Why Are There So Many Template Codes?

Here's our guide to why there are so many template codes and how to find one compatible with your labels.

We often get queries from customers who have an existing template code or need a template code but aren’t quite sure how these codes match up with the codes we use at Label Planet for our products and templates (or those used by other suppliers for their products and templates).

In the world of labels, there are a LOT of different codes (such as printer codes, product codes, label codes etc), with different manufacturers and suppliers often using their own unique set of codes – even when they’re talking about label templates and/or products that are actually exactly the same. So it’s not surprising that some people (including us!) sometimes get confused.

It gets extra complicated when manufacturers use the same codes for products and templates AND supply some label sizes in multiple material options. For example, if they supply one label size in five different materials, each of those material options will be counted as an individual product - and will therefore be given its own product code (and a template to match). However, these five matching templates will actually be exactly the same - because the products all share the same label size and layout.

This means that you can print any of these five products using any of these five templates. You can even use any of these five templates to print onto compatible label products (i.e. those that use the same label size and layout) from other label manufacturers and suppliers.

Here at Label Planet we use our own set of product codes (each beginning with “LP” so you know it’s a product from Label Planet) but, like other manufacturers and suppliers, we also provide a number of "standard" label sizes, which are compatible with labels (and templates) supplied by other label manufacturers and suppliers.

To find out if there is a compatible template code for labels you have purchased from Label Planet, you can either:

• Compare the measurements of your template code against our product list. You can search for a particular label size using our Label Finder. If you find a match, you can make sure that we use the same label layout by checking through the measurements listed on the individual template page for that product. Click on the Templates link on the product information page or visit our Label Templates home page and select your label shape and size.
