Label Planet’s Top Tips For Choosing The Right Label Size

August 16th, 2017

When it comes to producing the perfect label, size is (sometimes) everything – getting the right label size can go a long way towards making it much easier to create a clean cut label design that enhances the item that you need to label, whether you’re looking for a practical and professional finish or something that simply looks the part.

There are a few practical considerations to bear in mind when it comes to picking the perfect label size:

WHAT SIZE (& SHAPE) IS THE SURFACE YOU ARE LABELLING?
Obviously, you cannot choose a label size that is BIGGER than the item or surface that you want to label – so first you need to measure the surface of your item to determine the largest size that you could use within the available space.

Next you need to consider if there are any other limitations that would reduce the label size that you could use, including any aesthetic or practical reasons why a larger label size might not be the way to go. For example, if you are labelling products, you may have invested in specially designed or branded packaging, which would be needlessly covered up if you use too large a label. In this case, you want to make sure that the label size is a neat and compact one that won’t detract from the overall appearance of your products. Likewise, if you are labelling a surface that is in any way shaped or curved (e.g. bottles and jars), you may find that you cannot apply a label to a shaped portion of the surface, which will limit the space you have available to you for adding a label.

HOW MUCH SPACE DO YOU NEED FOR YOUR INFORMATION/DESIGN?
You also need to consider how much stuff you want to add to your label(s); if you’ve got a lot of important information to add OR you’ve got a large and intricate design to recreate, then you need to make sure that the label size you choose is large enough to accommodate that design – without forcing you to reduce your content to a smaller size just so it will fit (which will most likely either make your text illegible or make your design look cramped and badly planned.

We highly recommend taking a moment to type up the information that you’re planning to add to your labels or creating a quick rough sketch of the design you want to create to give yourself a better idea of how much room you need on your labels. If you find that your information is too cramped or busy looking, you can always play around with using multiple labels instead of a single label so that you can arrange your text neatly and legibly across different areas on your item.

WHAT LABEL SIZES ARE AVAILABLE (& WITHIN YOUR BUDGET)?
Unless you are planning to have bespoke labels made for you, the label size you choose may end up being determined for you by the label sizes that are available. Many companies who supply labels but do not manufacture labels will offer a limited number of label sizes to their customers; these “standard sizes” are created by dividing an A4 sheet into the required number of labels with as little waste around and between the labels as possible. These sizes are highly cost-effective and tend to be manufactured in high volume batches on a frequent basis.

At Label Planet, we supply standard sizes because they offer our customers a good choice of label sizes, are suitable for a wide range of label applications, are generally easy to print accurately and efficiently, allow us to provide high quality labels to our customers at good value, and are readily available allowing us to store a wide range of label products for same day despatch from stock.

While we aim to stock the best possible range of label products, some options are not carried as stocked items, which means that they will only be available to order in bulk boxes of 500 sheets. If this quantity exceeds your needs (and/or your budget), it may be worth compromising slightly on the label size you choose to find an alternative that is available in the material or adhesive you want as a stocked item.

So, when it comes to picking the perfect label size, our top tip has to be “a little preparation goes a long way”; take a bit of time to measure up how much space you have and how much space you need to give you a general idea of what label size(s) will work for you. Then, you can head on over to our website to see if we supply that particular label size or if we have a size that is close enough to fit your requirements.

We list all of our label sizes on our “Search By Width” and “Search By Height” pages; if you find a size that you think will work, you can then use our Label Finder or visit the template information page for that size (via our Template Home page or by clicking on the “Label Templates And Printing Information” link on each product page) to view all of the different material and adhesive options.

FAQ – How Do I Find Out More About Your Label Materials?

August 9th, 2017

When it comes to picking the perfect labels for your labelling project, you might need to know a bit more about the materials used to make your labels. For example, you might want to know more about the type of adhesive used, you might want to check the thickness of a particular label (to make sure that your printer is capable of processing your label sheets), or you might want to know if a particular material is suitable for your label application.

If this is the case, there are TWO really easy ways to find out more about the Label Planet labels you are interested in.

Firstly, you can visit our website. Each label product that we supply has its own dedicated range page, which provides the following information:

  • Key Facts: this lists the label material, printer compatibility, label adhesive, and waterproof status of the labels in question.
  • Product Information: this gives a brief description about the labels, including information about the material and adhesive along with some of the most popular uses for that particular type of label.
  • Common Uses: a short list of applications for which the label range is commonly used or particularly well-suited.
  • Material Specification Sheet: this sheet contains more detailed information about the material and adhesive used to make each label range – along with information about the weight and thickness of each material.

Secondly, if you don’t find the answer to your particular question or query on the range page of the labels you are interested in, you can always in get in touch with our Customer Service Team who will be more than happy to help. You can give us a call or send us an email – or you can even pop a note in the post – and no question is too big or too small (or too silly!).

Visit our LIST OF ALL MATERIALS page to find links to all of the range pages for our labels or visit our CONTACT US page to find out all of the ways you can get in touch with.

Label Planet’s Guide To Avery Labels

August 2nd, 2017

You may have noticed that we describe some of our products as being “Avery Compatible” and list “compatible Avery codes” for customers to use when printing the labels they have bought from us. This blog aims to provide a quickfire guide to what Avery labels are and why we mention them in connection with our products.

  1. We don’t sell Avery labels.
The first thing to point out is that we DON’T supply Avery labels; none of our products are made or endorsed by the Avery Dennison Group and we have no affiliation whatsoever with the Avery Dennison Group.
  1. We do sell some label sizes that are compatible with Avery label sizes.
Some of our label sizes are made using the exact same label size and layout as those used by Avery. We call our products “compatible” with those of Avery because they are the same (in terms of the size and layout) – however, the materials used to make our products may differ from those made by Avery.
  1. We supply Avery compatible labels because they are STANDARD label sizes that are suitable for a variety of label applications and they are cost-effective.
While the name “Avery” has become synonymous with labels, it is important to remember that there is a whole labelling industry apart from Avery who all make their own label sizes and layouts. The reason that many of these companies use the same label sizes and layouts as Avery is that these sizes are the most economical sizes that can be produced on A4 sheets (making them more cost-effective) and they are useful for a range of applications. Standard sizes of labels supplied on A4 sheets have their dimensions determined by the sizes that are naturally created by dividing an A4 sheet into the required number of equal sized rows and columns to create the required number of labels per sheet. When label layouts are created with blank edges around the sheet – known as selvedges – or gaps between the rows and/or columns (to ensure the label sheets can be printed accurately), the spaces are generally kept as small as possible to reduce the amount of waste material that is created on each sheet.
These sizes are manufactured regularly and in large volumes, which means that they incur lower manufacturing costs than more unusual sizes or bespoke labels that are made as and when they are requested.
We therefore sell a number of the same label sizes and layouts as Avery (and other manufacturers and suppliers do) because these products are easier to print accurately, are readily available, and allow us to pass on better prices to our customers.
  1. We list compatible Avery codes so that customers can choose to use our label templates or a built-in Avery template to print the labels they have bought from Label Planet.
Where one of our sizes is compatible with an Avery size you can print our labels using a template you have downloaded from our website OR using an Avery template that is built into the software you want (or need) to use to design and print your labels. We list any compatible Avery codes for our label products on the product packaging, product page, and template information page for that particular item.
  1. We list multiple Avery codes (where applicable) because of the way Avery named their products (and templates).
Every Avery product has its own unique product code that is also used for the template that can be used to print that product. This creates multiple compatible template codes because Avery supplies many of its label sizes in different materials; each material has its own code BUT the templates used to print these products will be exactly the same because they share the same label size and layout. For example, many of Avery’s label sizes are available as both a paper product for inkjet printers (with a unique Avery code, for example J8654) and as a paper product for laser printers (also with its own unique Avery code, for example L7654) – however, you can print either of these products with either template (J8654 or L7654) because they are exactly the same. You could also use either of these templates to print onto any of our label products that have a code beginning with LP40/45 – which use the same label size and layout as the Avery products.
  1. We do not supply any labels that are compatible with American Avery label sizes.
Avery supply DIFFERENT product ranges for the UK and US markets; this is because the US uses a page size of American Letter (8.5 inches x 11 inches or 215.9mm x 279.4mm) and label sizes that are measured in inches, while the UK uses a page size of A4 (210mm x 297mm) and label sizes that are measured in millimetres. You may have noticed that when you use built in Avery templates, the label vendor is given as “Avery A4/A5” – with another option for “Avery US Letter”. If you are using software that was developed by (and for) an American company, you will need to find an American label supplier that can ship to the UK. Alternatively, if you are able to shift away from American label sizes, you can convert your label measurements from inches to mm and you should be able to find a suitable UK label size that either matches or is close enough to the dimensions you want to use.
  1. We do not match Avery’s product list.
We have selected a range of label sizes that we feel offers our customers the best possible choice for a range of label applications but we do not aim to match Avery’s complete product list. This means that there may be some label sizes that Avery supply but that we do not. We do not offer a bespoke label service and the only label sizes we can supply are those listed on our website.
  1. We sell label sizes that Avery do not supply.
Of course, you may also be aware that Avery’s range of label sizes is smaller than those offered by other label manufacturers and suppliers (including Label Planet). Therefore, you will see that a number of our label products do not have any compatible Avery codes listed along with their product descriptions; this is because Avery simply do not supply labels in this size. We supply label templates (in both Word and PDF formats) for all of our label sizes so you don’t need to rely on a built in Avery template to get your labels designed and printed.

To find out if your Label Planet labels have a compatible Avery code you can check the product packaging, product page, or template information page (you can find this by clicking on the “Label Templates And Printing Information” link on the product page OR by visiting our Template Section). You could also visit our cross-index pages, which list all of the Label Planet label sizes that have compatible Avery codes and all of the Avery label sizes that have compatible Label Planet codes.

Despatch & Delivery For Self-Adhesive Labels From Label Planet

July 26th, 2017

If you’re looking to order self-adhesive labels but you need to know how long it will take for your items arrive, this blog post should have all the answers to your despatch & delivery questions!

Despatch of Self-Adhesive Labels
We try to maintain a wide range of stocked label sizes and materials to allow as many of our customers as possible to purchase labels that can be despatched same day. All of the label products on our website that have a minimum order quantity of 25 SHEETS or 100 SHEETS are stocked items that are available for same day despatch from stock.

Label products with a minimum order quantity of 500 SHEETS are generally made to order items that are despatched within five working days – although standard paper labels are generally kept in stock in larger volumes so we are able to despatch orders for these items much sooner (with standard matt white permanent labels often being available for same day despatch from our warehouse stock).

Made to order items are made on a rotational basis, which means that the time it takes for your labels to be made and despatched depends on when the item(s) you have ordered next appears in the rotation schedule (which takes five working days to cycle through). If you need your labels quickly, remember you can always contact us before placing an order so that we can contact the warehouse and confirm the despatch estimate for the particular item(s) that you want to order.

Delivery Of Self-Adhesive Labels
The delivery service we offer will depend on the quantity of sheets being ordered and the shipping address that you request.

Please note that we ONLY ship to the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

Standard delivery is by Royal Mail’s first class service or next working day carrier service; this service is included in the prices displayed on our website and is available for all orders with delivery addresses on the UK Mainland.

Standard delivery for Northern Ireland, Islands With UK Postcodes, and “Extended Postcode” regions is via Royal Mail’s first class service or 2-3 working day carrier service, while delivery to the Republic of Ireland is via Royal Mail’s international signed for service or 2-3 working day carrier service – both of which have additional shipping charges. Orders for delivery to the Republic of Ireland, therefore, must be placed by phone so that we can apply the correct shipping option for each particular order.

SMALL ORDERS (25-200 sheets): despatched same day via Royal Mail’s first class service (up to 4:30pm, Mon-Fri)

MEDIUM ORDERS (200-475 sheets): despatched same day via next (working) day carrier service (up to 3pm, Mon-Fri)

LARGE ORDERS (500+ sheets): despatched via next (working) day carrier service (up to 3pm, Mon-Fri) when stock is available; made to order items are despatched within five working days (with standard paper labels being despatched sooner).

Orders for delivery to Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Islands With UK Postcodes, and some “Extended Postcode” regions are despatched on a 2-3 working day carrier service (up to 3pm, Mon-Fri).

Special Delivery Options For Delivery Of Self-Adhesive Labels
We offer a range of special delivery options if you need to make sure that your labels arrive in plenty of time for an upcoming deadline. These special delivery options include Royal Mail special deliveries (for next day delivery before 1pm, 9am, or 1pm on a Saturday) and timed carrier deliveries (for next day delivery before 10am, 10:30am, or 12pm).

You can request any of these special delivery options by calling our Customer Service Team; they do incur an additional shipping charge but this is the fee that the Royal Mail/carrier provider charges us and we do not add our own shipping charges onto any orders.

Small orders of between 25-200 sheets can also be upgraded to a next day delivery option (for delivery on the next working day before 1pm) during the checkout process.

Remember, you can also check our despatch & delivery information by visiting our Delivery Information page and if you have any questions or concerns about how long it will take for an order to be despatched and delivered to you, you can always get in touch with our Customer Service Team and we’ll be happy to help!

Picking The Perfect Labels For Your Summer Foodie Projects

July 19th, 2017

Summer is the perfect time for making all sorts of sweet and savoury goodies to enjoy while you (try to) enjoy a bit of summer sun. Whether you’re a home-baker or home-brewer making a few seasonal delights for friends and family or you’re a restaurant or café looking to create a selection of succulent snacks to satisfy summer shoppers, you’ll probably need a few extra labels to get all of your ingredients and products labelled up before they’re handed out.

This blog takes a closer look at the Label Planet labels that are just perfect for labelling food and drink products.

Freezer Labels
Best For: Frozen Foods
If you’re making ice creams or desserts that need to be stored in freezer conditions then our freezer labels are the ideal choice. These paper labels are made with a special freezer adhesive that is suitable for use in temperatures ranging between -40°C to +60°C and was specifically developed for deep freeze label applications (in which other standard adhesives tend to fail).

These white labels can be handwritten or printed using a laser printer; we don’t recommend using an inkjet printer, as the water-based inks will be likely to run and smudge when they are exposed to condensation.

We have eight label sizes available to order for same day despatch from stock, with a further thirty-six label sizes available as made to order bulk boxes.

Water Wash Off Labels
Best For: Labelling Ingredients / Reusable Containers
Water wash off labels are a brilliant solution to the problem of needing to securely label a container (so that the contents can be identified at all times) before removing the label without damaging the container (so that the container can be cleaned and reused).

Our wash off labels are paper labels with a special “wash off” adhesive; this is permanent adhesive creates a strong bond with a surface BUT also breaks down when it is exposed to water (so it doesn’t leave behind any adhesive residue or damage the surface). This means that you can safely and securely label food and drink containers so that their contents are clearly identified and then wash the labels off before reusing and relabelling the containers as required.

Again, we have eight label sizes available for same day despatch from stock, with thirty-six additional made to order label sizes.

Waterproof Labels
Best For: Labelling Drink Bottles
If you need labels for drink bottles that are likely to be exposed to condensation or ice, you may want to consider using waterproof labels; these labels will not be damaged by exposure to water or other liquids, which will allow your labels to remain firmly in place and completely legible for the entire length of the application.

These labels need to be printed with a laser printer in order to produce waterproof print and we have a variety of materials options to help you find the perfect label for your products. You can choose between white labels or transparent labels and we also offer options for a gloss finish (a shiny finish) or a matt finish (a dull, non-shiny finish).

We supply seventeen label sizes of waterproof labels as stocked items (packs of 25 sheets available for same day despatch), with a further twenty-seven label sizes available as made to order items (boxes of 500 sheets).

You can view ALL of our label materials on our All Materials page, download a label template from our Label Templates home page, and you can also Request A Sample of any of our label materials to make sure that you pick the perfect stickers for your summery snacks.

Top Tips For Storing Labels In Hot Weather

July 12th, 2017

With summer underway and some good weather – hopefully – on hand, we thought we’d put together a few top tips for storing your labels safely during the summer months (or whenever the Great British Weather decides to behave itself).

All of our labels are self-adhesive labels, which means they are tacky (sticky) at “normal” room temperatures – and so only require light pressure from a finger or hand to create a strong adhesive bond upon contact with a surface.

This does mean that the quality of the adhesive bond can be influenced by the temperature – during storage, application, and the duration of the label application. High temperatures tend to speed up the process of adhesion (causing the adhesive to set more quickly) and low temperatures tend to slow down or even prevent the adhesive process altogether. This means that if your labels get too hot or too cold, the quality of the adhesive bond that they can maintain will deteriorate.

High temperatures can also cause adhesive bleed; this is when the adhesive starts to spread out from the adhesive layer, where it can penetrate into the other layers of the labels themselves (and possibly damage these labels, for example by causing discolouration of the face material) or emerge from around the edges of the labels. This can cause problems when you try to print your label sheets as they may not feed correctly, which can cause print misalignment or may lead to your sheets getting jammed in your printer.

Therefore we recommend following these simple steps to store your self-adhesive labels safely so they retain their original quality for when you need to use them next:

  • Keep your labels in their original plastic packaging
  • Store your labels away from direct sunlight
  • Make sure the room temperature doesn’t exceed 25 degrees (and avoid spaces with fluctuating temperatures if possible)
  • Never store unused labels in the printer tray or next to the printer (or any other electrical devices) as the printer may get hot during usage.

Hopefully there is still some good weather to come over the summer months (and maybe even beyond) but – with these top tips – you can rest assured that your labels will be ready and waiting for you the next time you need to print some labels.

You can find more of our TOP TIPS in our Help Section, along with advice on how to design and print your own self-adhesive labels.

FAQ – What Label Sizes Do You Supply (& Why Those Sizes Anyway)?

July 5th, 2017

Customers often come to us with a particular label size in mind – which we may or may not supply. Generally speaking, if we don’t supply a particular size we are usually able to offer a suitable alternative BUT in some cases we simply won’t have a label size that comes close to a customer’s requested measurements. At Label Planet, we specialise in supplying A4 sheets of self-adhesive labels, which means that – while we try to offer the best possible range of label sizes – there are a number of factors that determine the number of label sizes we are able to supply as well as the actual measurements of those label sizes…

  1. We are a label supplier (not a label manufacturer).
We only supply label sizes that are already available as pre-existing “standard label sizes” and we do not manufacture bespoke labels to suit a customer’s unique set of requirements.
  1. We aim to supply customers with quality labels at competitive prices.
Standard sizes are made in bulk on a regular basis and have much lower manufacturing costs than bespoke items (that are made in smaller quantities as and when they are requested – sometimes with the added cost of having a die cutter made to produce labels in the exact size and layout required), which allows us to offer our customers much better prices.
  1. We specialise in supplying labels on A4 sheets.
The label sizes we supply are largely determined by the dimensions of an A4 sheet (210mm wide by 297mm high); standard label sizes are created by dividing up an A4 sheet into a number of equal rows and columns, which is why certain measurements crop up over and over again. For example, if you divide a sheet into two you get 105mm (or 99.1mm if you leave a gap between the labels) and if you divide it into three you get 70mm (or 63.5mm), which is why we have a number of label sizes that have these measurements as their widths.
Manufacturers also prefer to make products that have as little waste material as possible, which means that standard label sizes tend to be those that are created when a sheet is divided up into individual labels with no gaps between or around the labels at all AND/OR that provide a narrow selvedge (blank strip) around the edge of the sheet AND/OR have narrow gaps between the labels to create a layout that is easier to design and print accurately.
  1. We aim to supply labels that are easy for our customers to print themselves.
Some label sizes and layouts are more difficult to design and print accurately, while others create practical difficulties when it comes to printing labels using a standard desktop printer. For example, most standard desktop printers cannot print all the way to the edge of an A4 sheet (leaving an unprintable area around the edge of the sheet), which means that many of our label sizes have selvedges (or blank strips) around the sheet to avoid this issue. We also avoid supplying very large label sizes because they tend to waste a lot of material and we avoid very small label sizes because they carry a risk of separating from the backing sheet as they are pulled through the rollers in desktop printers.
  1. We have limited shelf space.
We aim to supply as wide a range of label sizes as possible so our customers can visit our website confident in the knowledge that they should be able to find a suitable label for their particular application – with many of our most popular label sizes available for same day despatch from stock. HOWEVER, we also have limited space for stock and it would be extremely impractical (indeed impossible) to maintain a label range that offers every possible label size and material combination.
Therefore, we have tried to select label sizes that are suitable for a miscellany of purposes so that as many customers as possible will be able to visit our site and find a size that is suitable for their application.

You can view our full range of label sizes by visiting our Labels Listed By Width and Labels Listed By Height pages – and you can find all of the material options for each label size by visiting the relevant template information page (found via our Template Home Page OR by clicking on the “Label Templates And Printing Information” link displayed on every product page).

FAQs – Which Label Adhesive Should I Choose?

June 28th, 2017

Visitors to our website may have noticed that we offer a range of label adhesives to suit a range of label applications; while this should provide our customers with the perfect label for their unique requirements, it can be a bit tricky to make sure you’ve chosen the right one – particularly if you don’t really know very much about adhesives.

With this in mind, we’ve put together a flowchart to help guide you in the right direction when it comes to choosing the right adhesive for you. Simply follow the arrows and answer TWO easy questions to find out what kind of label adhesive is best suited to your needs.

The one exception to the first question is short term label applications that involve temporarily applying labels onto clothing (e.g. name badges worn for a networking event). In this case, we would recommend using a standard permanent adhesive; fabrics have very unusual surfaces that removable adhesives will struggle to bond with properly, while permanent adhesives will have enough strength to hold your labels in place but won’t form a solid and even bond – allowing them to be safely removed from clothing.

Remember, if you’re still not sure, you can always Request A Sample to try a few different products for yourself to make absolutely sure that they’ll do the job that you need them to do. Simply fill in our online Sample Request Form or get in touch with our Customer Service Team.

You can find out more about all of our label adhesives (and place an order for the ones you need) by visiting our LIST OF LABEL ADHESIVES page.

Get Creative With Gloss Clear Labels From Label Planet

June 14th, 2017

This week, we’re taking an in-depth look at one of our synthetic self-adhesive labels, GLOSS CLEAR POLYESTER INKJET LABELS, which have a few useful features that make them perfect for all kinds of creative purposes.

GIVE ME A G! (GLOSS)
These labels have a high gloss finish, which means that they are very efficient at reflecting light and so have an attractive bright and shiny appearance. This makes these labels extremely popular for any label application that requires the use of a decorative and/or professional looking label – but one that avoids being too overpowering or colourful.

GIVE ME A C! (CLEAR)
Our GCP labels are made with a transparent polyester and a transparent adhesive, which means that – once applied onto a solid white or coloured background – they can be seen through quite clearly. While our transparent labels are not frosted or translucent, they are not “glass clear”; in other words, when a label is applied onto glass, the adhesive will cause some bubbles of air or dust to be trapped beneath the label which prevents it from having a truly 100% transparent appearance.

These labels are a brilliant way to add branding or additional information onto all kinds of items because they won’t obscure or detract from any existing designs on the surface being labelled. They’re also ideal if you are having trouble colour matching labels to your existing print or design.

GIVE ME A P! (POLYESTER)
Polyester is a synthetic material that is extremely tough and durable, which means these labels can be used in a wide range of environments and for all kinds of applications. The labels themselves are waterproof and long lasting, which makes them ideal for both short term or long term applications.

Polyester does have a strong memory (i.e. when the material is distorted in some way – for example, by bending it around a narrow curve – it will try to return to its original flat state), which means that these labels may not be suitable for labelling extremely curved surfaces such as very narrow cylinders.

GIVE ME AN I! (INKJET)
GCP labels are designed specifically for use with inkjet printers, which means that they can be used to produce extremely high quality label designs – including reproductions of photographs and high resolution artwork.

It should be noted that, while the labels themselves are waterproof, most inkjet inks are water-based and this means that the print will run or smudge if it gets wet or is handled a lot. To create waterproof printed labels using GCP you would need to either purchase a protective spray to cover the print or you would need to apply a second label over a printed label in order to protect the print from exposure to water.

GIVE ME AN L! (LABELS)
Our range of GCP labels is extremely popular for a variety of label applications including decorative address labels, product labels and packaging labels, promotional and marketing labels, and decorative window stickers.

They can also be used to create mini dry-wipe boards that can be written on using a dry-wipe marker pen before wiping clean so you can use them again and again (and again and again!).

To find out more or to buy your own marvellous GLOSS CLEAR POLYESTER INKJET LABELS simply visit the GCP range page or fill in our online SAMPLE REQUEST FORM to try before you buy.
