Learn More About Waterproof Labels

All of the parts that make up a waterproof label must be waterproof. This includes the face material, adhesive, coatings, and print.

This means that most waterproof labels are made with synthetic materials (usually polyester) and are compatible with laser printers only.

This is because laser printers use heat and pressure to bond a dry powder (toner) onto surfaces, which produces waterproof print. Inkjet printers tend to use water-based inks, which run or smudge when wet.

Waterproof materials often provide various benefits compared to paper materials (like durability and options like clear materials). They are the best option for outdoor applications and are also popular for indoor applications where items may get wet (such as kitchen and bathroom products) or for long term applications where information must clear and legible on an item – possibly for its lifetime.

Choosing And Buying Waterproof Labels From Label Planet

This page lists our most popular waterproof labels. Use the tabs at the top of the page to view each range. Our waterproof labels include four white waterproof materials, one silver, and two clear. They are all supplied on A4 sheets and are suitable for laser printers only (MWPE may be printed with inkjet printers BUT most inkjet inks are not waterproof). They are available in 54 label sizes, including rectangles, circles, squares, and ovals. Our most popular sizes are stocked in 25 sheet packs; these sizes are listed at the top of each page. All of our sizes are available in 500 sheet bulk boxes.

When choosing a product, you need to think about the adhesive, material, and finish that best fits your needs.

What waterproof adhesive should I choose?

There are two types of adhesive – permanent and removable. Within these two types, there are standard and speciality adhesives. Standard adhesives suit most general applications, while speciality adhesives are designed for specific applications, conditions, or environments.

We supply three waterproof adhesives. Our standard permanent adhesive suits most applications that require a waterproof label. It is available on GWP, SMP, GTP, and MTP. Our standard removable adhesive is perfect for temporary applications and is available on MWR (and GTR – waterproof clear labels).

Our marine standard permanent adhesive is designed specifically for outdoor use and meets the BS5609 (part 2) marine quality standard. It is available on MWPE and MWP (and MWPO and MWPP).

So, choose MWPE or MWP if stickiness is key and choose MWR (or GTR) for temporary applications.

What waterproof material should I choose?

Most of our waterproof labels are made with polyester. This material is thin, hard, rigid, and non-stretchy. This means it is suitable for flat or gently sloping surfaces. For curved surface (or unusual materials like building materials or material samples), MWPE is the best choice. MWPE is made with polyethylene, which is thick, softer, more flexible and deformable, and stretchy. Please note that polyester is heat resistant, while polyethylene is not.

What is the difference between matt and gloss waterproof finishes?

Gloss finishes are bright and shiny – perfect for decorative applications. They draw attention on matt surfaces or blend in with gloss materials. They are easier to wipe and clean. Matt finishes are dull and plain; they are best for printing machine-readable barcodes or QR codes and work great on matt materials.

If you are looking for a more decorative finish, you could also choose SMP, which is matt metallic silver. This range is primarily used on high value goods such as appliances and electronic devices. It is particularly popular as long-life tracking or asset labels, warranty labels, and for branding high value items.

Common Uses For Waterproof Labels

Long life tracking labels – durable waterproof materials are perfect for applications where information must remain with an item long term or for the lifetime of an item, especially if the item will be exposed to unusual or challenging conditions. Items can be labelled with identifying information, instructions, or tracking information that will remain clear and legible. This can be in the form of text, images, or barcodes and QR codes.
Outdoor or marine conditions – our marine adhesive is ideal for outdoor applications. This includes labelling equipment, tools, supplies, materials, and products that are stored or used in wet conditions – where identifying information, instructions, or signs must remain in place even under adverse conditions. For example, kitchen, bathroom, or gardening products; rental equipment; equipment at swimming pools / marinas / lakes and seaside locations; and supplies and equipment for construction / maintenance / landscaping and gardening companies.
Signage (long term and short term) – waterproof materials are a great way to create professional signs and notices for long term or short term use. This could include signage in warehouses, retail spaces, offices, outdoor spaces, or for special events, including markets, fairs, exhibitions, conferences, competitions, local celebrations, and sporting events.
MWR works best if you need temporary signage that can be updated as needed or removed once an event is over or the signage is no longer needed.
Retail labels / product labels – create professional labels and signage for retail environments, both indoors and outdoors (including external displays, garden centres, and outdoor markets). Add directions, information, or promotional messages to shelving and retail units.
They are perfect product labels for items that may be exposed to water during use as they can be wiped clean and dry if needed. This includes kitchen, bathroom, and gardening products like food and drink products, bottles and jars, cleaning products, cosmetics, and gardening tools and supplies. Durable, waterproof materials are also a great way to ensure that information remains clear and legible for the lifetime of an item.
MWR works best if you need to create temporary signs that can be removed and updated as needed without damaging surfaces.
High value goods – SMP makes professional branding, asset labels, tracking labels, or warranty labels for high value goods, including electrical and electronic appliances. Securely and clearly label items with health and safety warnings and instructions, product information and specifications, servicing dates and results, and contact details for the relevant manufacturer, distributor, or servicing company.
Manufacturing and storing – use MWR to temporarily add information or provide protective covering to products and parts during manufacturing and storage – especially when items have delicate or decorative surfaces that might be marked by the manufacturing process.
Curved and uneven surfaces / unusual materials – MWPE is the best option for curved surfaces because the polyethylene bends easily while the strong adhesive holds it in place. Perfect for bottle labels, jar labels, and other round containers. It is also extremely sticky, which suits unusual materials that other adhesives struggle to stick to properly.

These labels actually work!!! Ever-hopeful to believe the "waterproof" hype surrounding the labels, I thought "Well, it's not too much money. Maybe it will work...." These labels are affixed on the hull of my kayak below the waterline. The boat is normally stored in a communal boat shed and the labels tell potential users of my boat that the boat is privately owned. A good product. The labels themselves are waterproof. And the labels work perfectly with waterproof markers - whether fine pen-like markers or coarse chisel-type sharpies. No bleeding. Ever. These labels actually work!!!

Good quality labels. Stick well and stay stuck to slippery surfaces. Nice matt finish producing a high quality look. Can be peeled off and re-positioned if done quickly without creasing unlike other metallic labels I've used in the past. Slightly difficult to peel away from the sheet of labels without starting to peel other labels off because of the very high density of labels. Because of the small size of the labels the paper needs to be very precisely aligned in the printer to ensure that all of the labels are printed in the right place.
